What Our Fire Extinguisher Maintenance Service Covers
Our monthly fire extinguisher inspection service ensures that your extinguishers are always in good shape so that you and your employees can get back to work – with peace of mind that safety is being maintained.
On each visit, our qualified and experienced inspector will ensure that:
- Each fire extinguisher is in its assigned place.
- No fire extinguisher is obstructed or hidden.
- Each fire extinguisher is mounted correctly.
- All pressure gauges are in the green.
- There is no visible damage to any fire extinguisher.
Proof of inspection is recorded by a paper tag hanging from the extinguisher. After the monthly inspection, the inspector puts their initials and the date on the tag indicating that the inspection was completed.

FAQs — Fire Extinguisher Inspection
The Ontario Fire Code requires portable fire extinguishers to be visually inspected every month, with a full annual maintenance check completed by a certified technician. Depending on the extinguisher type, additional internal maintenance and hydrostatic testing are required every 5, 6, or 12 years. TRAIN SMART's monthly inspection service covers the recurring visual check so your business always has an up-to-date, tagged, and compliant extinguisher on hand. Requirements are subject to change — verify current requirements with MLITSD or a qualified health and safety professional.
Under the Ontario Fire Code, the employer or property owner is responsible for ensuring extinguishers are inspected and the records are kept. Monthly visual checks can be carried out by a designated in-house person, but many employers prefer a qualified third party to guarantee consistency, proper documentation, and accountability if a Fire Marshal or Ministry inspector asks to see records. TRAIN SMART's inspectors handle the monthly visit so your team can stay focused on production, not paperwork.
A compliant monthly check confirms the extinguisher is in its assigned location, unobstructed and clearly visible, mounted correctly, free of visible damage, and that the pressure gauge reads in the operable (green) range. Our inspectors record their findings and initial and date the inspection tag on every visit, so you have a clear, ongoing compliance record if you're ever audited.
A monthly inspection is a visual check confirming the extinguisher is present, accessible, and appears operable. The annual maintenance check goes deeper — a certified technician performs a full internal and mechanical examination in line with NFPA 10, which the Ontario Fire Code adopts as the servicing standard. Both are legally required and serve different purposes: monthly checks catch day-to-day problems (an extinguisher knocked off its mount, a blocked cabinet), while the annual service verifies the unit will actually function in a fire. Requirements are subject to change — verify current requirements with MLITSD or a qualified health and safety professional.
